There are so many places to go, and sometimes it’s hard to decide whether to return to somewhere you love or try somewhere new. One of the places I’ve been to a number of times is Prince Edward Island.
If you’ve never been to PEI, you should go. It’s fun to stop in Halifax on the way, if you are driving, it’s a beautiful, charming, seaside town with a lot of history. You can arrive at PEI by driving over the bridge, or taking the ferry from Caribou, Nova Scotia. You can also fly, though I never have.
PEI is rural and agricultural, so if you are looking for loud entertainment, this island is not for you. It’s picturesque, with the biggest rolling hills I’ve ever seen and lots of mini golf! I have a strange affection for mini golf when I’m on vacation. Of course, there is also Green Gables, located in Cavendish. Do kids even read Anne of Green Gables anymore? I loved those books growing up so when I first visited PEI, that was a lot of fun.
Perhaps one of the most important reasons I love PEI is the food. And by food I mean lobster. And lobster bakes. They are often hosted in church basements or places that remind you of an ugly school cafeteria. But nevermind, the simplicity and deliciousness is why you go, not the decor.
These places serve pretty much only…lobster, and you can choose the weight of your lobster (and lucky for me, you can even get them already shelled if that bothers you!) and your sides, and that’s that. It’s fun to try the different clam chowders, too, but obviously the lobster is the star of the show.
My husband, despite being born in Canada and acting Canadian sometimes has never been to PEI. I think it’s high time we make a plan to go there and eat as much lobster as possible. I’m pretty sure it will live up to expectations.
Have you been to PEI? Where is somewhere you really want to go back to?
