Since I was sick all week, I did have extra time to surf the web (I mean write) every evening instead of going to the gym. DH and I had Valentine’s Day at home (and yes, I did get something on my Valentine’s Day wishlist! Thanks DH.).
We made fondue. It was delicious. And the conversation quickly spiraled downwards after about an hour of shrimp, filet, and some delicious Ommegang named after Game of Thrones (never seen the show…whoops).
Somehow, which happens with strange frequency, we got on the topic of tropical diseases. Me: “Hey hun, have you heard of dracunculiasis?” DH: “No, what’s that?” Me: “It’s that worm that they have to wrap on a stick a tiny bit at a time to get out. It’s almost eradicated, which is super cool.” DH: “No, hun, haven’t heard of that.” Me: “So, I know it’s sort of weird while we are eating, but can I show you a photo?” DH: “Sure, go ahead.”
This resulted in lots of reading about Guinea worm and status of current eradication work. And obviously lots of photos. On Valentine’s Day. DH must really love me.
For some other drivels this week…
- If there really was a place like Jurassic Park, would you go? I think I totally would. I mean, despite all the potentially ethical issues, I’d pay a ton to see a real-life dinosaur, much less a bunch of them. I actually am not a movie person (after much internal debate, I just think this is true), but I’m really looking forward to Jurassic World. Are you?
- With the Ebola outbreak calming down in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia (despite this week and last week’s increased case counts), would you consider traveling to any of these countries in the near future? I think Liberia is the closest to having Ebola under wraps, and it’s surely a fascinating place. Beyond just the culture, the disease-outbreak lover in me is fascinated by Monkey Island, recently the star of a VICE documentary. Regardless of what you think of VICE (or animal testing, for that matter), the science and history of these chimpanzees is fascinating.
- Since I can’t seem to do a single weekly roundup without mentioning my shopping challenge, why make this week an exception? There will be no President’s Day shopping for me! But that doesn’t mean I can’t keep my eye on this perfect spring blazer from J.Crew. I wish more stores would offer things (or more things) in Tall. Like simple v-neck t-shirts. Hint hint, J.Crew.
- Finally, my mom sent me an awesome TinTin book for Valentine’s Day. It’s a collection of Herge’s sketches, history, and tales of TinTin. I’ve been totally obsessed with TinTin for years. In fact, DH bought me a TinTin book on our very first Valentine’s Day eight years ago. I can’t wait to read some more. And go to Brussels to the Herge museum, of course! Toasty, just don’t judge me if I come back with a life-size Snowy.
Happy President’s Day!

I used to enjoy some of the TinTin stories when I was a child too – I still remember learning French at school and in one class, we had to read the French version of TinTin and the Crab with Golden Claws – it’s funny, I don’t really remember much of the French but I remember the story 😀

I too remember trying to read TinTin in French…it resulted in literally thirty minutes of trying to figure out what the translation was of a certain phrase. It ended up being “blistering barnacles”. And…I realized my French was not up to that standard 🙂
