I’d be so nervous about having no clue what’s on the menu but I too would find it quite endearing actually, especially in this day and age when there’s absolutely no element of surprise in going out for dinner in most places with everyone always being able to check menus online etc! The charcoal ice cream sounds so intriguing!

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear you had a bad stay — so frustrating!! Rude staff to me is the most discouraging…I can overlook a lot if the staff goes out of their way to fix an issue to the best of their ability or be accommodating.

No more Westins for me after a particularly bad stay at Westin Puerto Vallarta. Executive lounge room that was supposed to include nightly turn down (1 night out of 4…..after complaining), rude staff, poor food, uncomfortable pool lounge chairs, etc, etc, etc

I hope you love them–mine are still going strong and have been packed and used all over. I know sometimes they don’t fit everyone.

Have a lovely, lovely time in Rwanda. It’s a beautiful place and the gorillas are amazing. Take lots of layers as you will be at a higher altitude–the nights get very chilly and the days can get relatively warm for pretty short periods when the sun comes out.

Also, don’t hesitate to get a porter if you want one. They love to have the work and are very sure-footed. There were some in our group who thought they were being “tough” by not getting one, but to me, it’s not whether you “need” one, it’s whether it may make your trek more enjoyable (whether this means helping you up the mountain or just holding your bag while you take lots of pictures, etc).
